People will tell you that you can’t, but don’t listen.

              writing life

I want to dispel a rumor today. In writing you will not EVER reach the place that your writing success will make you happy if you are expecting a certain level to be “it”. When I started writing I really thought that there would be a spot where I would suddenly be a real writer. A real writer is a person who daily pursues the craft, builds their sphere of influence [platform], and continually watches life around them. It is a person who sees life in a different way.

So, instead of trying to figure out when you will become a real writer, live the writing life. Keep a notebook in your pocket. Live in the world of interior monologue. Think of creative ways to describe every sight and emotion. Then take the time to write it down.

People will tell you that you can’t be a writer. People will try to limit you by defining you based on their standards. Instead of getting caught up in all of that, focus on what you can control. Your writing.

Earn Money Writing-Paying Market

It is not often that I’m able to blog about a paying market that is currently looking for writers but I am thrilled to be able to tell you about one today. For aspiring writers one of the biggest steps on your path to publication is getting bylines. This is an important affirmation and gives you valuable experience working with editors and working under a deadline.

The first few years as a full-time writer I wrote many free articles. Blogs weren’t all the rage at that point [although they were growing in popularity] but I did write for a local paper that had a readership of more than 50,000 people. I learned interview techniques as well as how to work with my editor on an assignment.

But now writers have opportunities to reach far more readers. Before I give the contact information for this paying market I want to again revisit the purpose of writing articles.

1. Articles help you reach your potential readership. If your stories center around interesting historical facts in your area [say, the history of Eastern Tennessee] then you’d do well to have articles written that will be read by others interested in that area or era. That way you gain credibility and when your novel is released you have an interested audience. Likewise, if your books center around dogs [rescue dogs, service dogs, or dogs with unusual personalities] then writing articles for dog lovers will give you a chance to build relationships with potential readers.

2. Articles help improve your craft. In an article you must write succinctly. You learn an economy of words. This is even more crucial when writing online where you want to maintain 500 words or less in most cases.

3. Articles give you a chance to share all of those interesting stories you have as a result of your research. You’ve spent so much time learning about this, share your knowledge with others passionate about the same topic.

So, where is this market? The Examiner. It is an online article database that PAYS for articles. I am the national writing examiner. You can read my most recent article here.

The great thing about this market it not only does it pay but they pay you based on your traffic. They teach you how to market your articles. So, what does that mean???

YOU GET PAID TO LEARN A SKILL YOU NEED ANYWAY!!

Yes, it is all coming together now. All that I’ve taught you about getting paid by someone else to learn a skill you need. All that I’ve said about articles to build your platform. It all happens here! I’m so excited about this, I wanted to be sure it was true before I told you about it. I am thrilled to say, it is!

So, I’d like to encourage you to sign up and begin to build your skills. [The link is below read the 3 important things below before you do.] Sign up for local spots if you’d prefer to build a local platform. Remember, you don’t have to focus on writing. Keep in mind what I’ve taught you before about reaching out to your potential market.

There are a few important things to know before you apply:
1. There is an application process. This is not a blog. You must apply for the position which will take about 20-30 minutes. You need to provide a writing sample and fill out an application.

2. You need to have an article ready to go live. If you are accepted they will want you to put up an article fairly quickly. Be ready with something that is about 400 words so that you can begin earning immediately. I’m earning money already…it is VERY exciting.

3. Let them know that I referred you. There are 3 reasons I ask this. First, there is a referral bonus that they give people. I heard about this from another writer and put her name in [not realizing she got a bonus for it.] Once I started and realized that I’d given her a bonus I was glad I took the time to put in her name. Remember, my name is spelled Tiffany Colter. Second reason, if you put me down as the one who referred you they contact me that you went live. I want to follow your articles so once I see your page up I will click to follow you. That allows me to tweet, comment and otherwise help you with your new fame!! And third, I want to talk to all of you who become Examiners. I want to write an article on what you learned your first 4-6 weeks. The best way for me to keep track will be those Examiner emails.

Here is the link to the topics they currently want filled.

I know that many authors have been burned by article sites that say they will pay and then don’t. So far I have been incredibly impressed by the professionalism and follow through of the Examiner staff. They have answered all my emails [and even called me to tell me they liked my article and to see if I had any questions]. It is rare that I’ve been treated with this much courtesy early on.

So, I hope that I’ll see 20 or 30 of your names popping in my email this week to tell me that you are the newest Examiners!!

And even if you aren’t ready to take the plunge and work as a regular writer, check out this article on building your readership.

Why Should You Care?

What differentiates your writing from that of others? What is it that makes your craft more exciting than that of other writers.

Do you have a unique angle?

While it isn’t always necessary to have a specific thing, like Koontz has Dogs, it is necessary to know what it is that distinguishes your writing from that of other writers.

Many times as part of our marketing we do a comparative analysis. We look at similar books. The purpose of this is to say that the READERS of those books will likely be among the people who would also enjoy your book.

However, you must always be aware of what it is that makes you unique. Build on it. Integrate it in your marketing. Make it a part of your website. Use it in giveaways.

Begin to determine what is unique about you, your writing and your stories.

What is your reader doing right now?

Recently I’ve encountered a large number of aspiring writers who have a target market like this:

Men and women 18-65

I can pretty well guarantee you that will not impress book publishers. In fact, it looks downright unprofessional!!

Of course we want everyone to like our books but take the time to think of WHO specifically your reader is.

What are they doing right now?

There are numerous sheets that you can download that ask you to think about the various characteristics of your hero/heroine. They’ll ask eye color, face shape, favorite childhood experience, greatest fear.

We need to have these questions so that we can get inside the head of our character…

And that is the exact reason you need to know this about your reader too.

Unless you take the time to get inside their head and find out what interests them your platform will be worthless.

I am only in my early 30s but I am finding an increasing gap between me and people in their early 20s. When I was a senior in high school you were not allowed to wear a pager in school. [we were told the only people who wore pagers were drug dealers...which still seems pretty dumb to me!!] Now I have a 10 year old child that I homeschool who INSISTS that she needs a cell phone! Why? I drive her to dance, her clubs and camps!! When does she need to reach me?

Here is an assignment for the weekend: Think about your current WIP [Work in Progress]. What is the most effective way to reach this target reader? Are they more likely to want bonus content on your website or a Tweet when you post a blog?

Is your target reader more likely to read an article on the latest fashions or the latest scientific discovery? Are they more interested in current events or cutting coupons?

These are the questions I ask myself as I prepare to write blogs. I consider where each of you likely are in your writing and I think about what would most benefit you to read. Right now there aren’t large sales at publishing houses so people need to think about creative marketing. We need to try to get beyond what “has always been done” and focus on “what will bring results.”

So that is the exercise. I hope you’re up to the challenge.

How are you perceived?

I am currently reading “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” by Al Reis and Jack Trout. It is an interesting and quick read. Id suggest you take the time to grab it at the library or bookstore and see what nuggets you can glean from it.

Tonight I was reading over a few things and I stopped on Chapter 4 “The Law of Perception”. According to this chapter it is perception, not fact, that is crucial to your marketing strategy. This is very interesting to consider and has major implications to a writer’s marketing plan.

But this does explain a few things…

For example, a best selling book isn’t always the one that is the best written [as many writers will tell you].

Despite their decades in the industry, publishers continue to be shocked when a book breaks out.

It also shows us why a website is crucial!! You are PERCEIVED to be more of a professional if you have an online presence. Furthermore, the perception of you is heightened or diminished based on the quality of that online presence.

It is why my publicity photos are of me in a nice top with make-up on and my hair done RATHER than the jeans and pony tail I usually wear when I’m writing.

So consider how you are perceived. I am not asking you to be fake or to be someone you are not, but your online presence is your ‘job interview’ to future readers. Your interactions with editors and agents today will shape your reputation in the industry for years to come. You want to be seen as a professional who is reliable.

When you are marketing your services you want to exude professionalism and instill confidence.

When you are marketing your writing you want your website to give the feel of your books.

Now that you’ve considered it-what do you need to adjust or enhance to give the impression you want others to have of you?

Oh how quickly they fall

I’ve learned many lessons about life, marketing and writing over the last 10 days. One thing I learned was the fleeting nature of blog traffic.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about you loyal readers. What I’m talking about is how current content must remain in order to maintain a readership.

While my average readership between my three blogs is up an average of 78% over last month I saw a drop of nearly 50% in the last week.

Why? Because I wasn’t updating. Without a steady stream of new content on my blog there is no reason for you to come read. When you don’t read you aren’t sending others to read.

Soon…my blog fades to oblivion.

SO, how can you avoid this?

1. Always learn. Make sure you are reading books [or at least chapters] as well as online information about the industry you blog on.
2. Be a reliable source of information. I try to post 3 times a week, every week on each blog.
3. Anticipate your reader’s need, then fulfill them.
4. Practice what you preach! Make sure that you have credibility with your readership. For me that means applying the principles that I suggest to you. For you it might mean keeping up to date on changes in gardening techniques or the political landscape. Whatever it is, stay relevant and credible.

And above all else, value your readership. Make them a priority and don’t waste their time with fluff. I could have posted gibberish the last few days, but you are busy people. I’d rather post nothing that to build a reputation as someone who will do anything to have a blog post.

Don’t forget to take advantage of my conference special. You have until today to email payment and until Monday to send your entries. I’ve received glowing reviews of my work. Here is one from someone who took me up on my offer. Jody Hedlund bragged about me on Rachelle Gardner’s blog. Thanks so much Jody!

Interview with Multi-published Author Robin Jones Gunn

I’m very pleased to welcome Robin Jones Gunn author of 70 books. You can find out more about her at her WONDERFUL website www.RobinGunn.com

Writing Career Coach: What are some of the things you’ve done to help build your brand?
Robin Jones Gunn: I was first published over 25 years ago and back then writers were more invisible. We were coached to make the book titles or the characters more memorable to the readers than the author’s name. Things have changed in the past decade. While many readers recognize “Christy Miller” “Sierra Jensen” or “The Glenbrooke Series” or “Sisterchicks®”, they don’t recognize “Robin Jones Gunn”. That was always fine with me. Then I finally signed with an agent a few years ago and soon learned I had some branding work to do if my agent was going to be able to sell my next project. Publishers want to sign authors who have a following, not a series that has a following.
First thing I did was become deliberate about collecting email addresses to build my data base. I think this is the most important marketing step any writer can take. I now invite readers to sign up for my e-newsletter via my website as well as invite them to give me their email at all book signings and speaking events. At first I felt funny asking but now I don’t. While I sign their book, I invite them to sign my guest book. It feels friendly.
Then I hired someone part time to input and organize the data base and help put together newsletters. We’ve been doing this a little over a year and the rhythm of it is beginning to fall into place. The crazy thing to me is how the data base grew so quickly. The e-newsletter has become an excellent way to keep in touch with interested readers and offer giveaways as well as list where I’ll be signing or speaking. I’m using my name now as the “brand” or umbrella and all the various books fall under that one umbrella.

WCC: In addition to excellent writing, what have you done to connect to fans and potential fans?
RJG: Now that our two children are grown and living outside the home, I’m taking on more speaking opportunities. While they were home I didn’t want to be gone too much because I knew those years would go quickly – and they did! I don’t regret passing on speaking invitations in the past but now that I have more invitations I’m being selective and yet doing as many as I can. This is the best way to connect with readers. Again, it’s about being deliberate and making the best use of time and opportunities.
I receive a crazy amount of emails from readers. I make sure all of them receive a response. It may take awhile, but I want them to know they have been heard and that I appreciate them. I’m going to meet these readers in heaven. It’s a privilege to start the friendship now.
Facebook has been an easy way to connect with readers. Come be my friend! My ID is robinjonesgunn@hotmail.com. I also have been having way too much fun twittering! My twitter ID is RobinGunn

WCC: How did you get your start in writing?
RJG: The whole story is on my website www.robingunn.com Basically, I’ve always been a storyteller. I wrote kids books and articles when our children were little. It was a bit of a hobby then, I think. I saw writing as a fun way to make a little money and express a creative part of me that was not being used at my job at the bank where I worked for 6 years.
I wrote “Summer Promise” in the Christy Miller series as my first novel for teens because the girls in our youth group challenged me to write a book for them. They even helped me write it page by page. That first novel took two years to write and I received ten rejections so you can imagine how excited I was when the book was finally accepted. I thought that was it. One YA novel. I’m done. That was fun. But God had oh-so much bigger plans! I just turned in my 70th novel, “Coming Attractions”, which is book 3 in the Katie Weldon Series. Combined sales of all books is just over 4 million copies sold. Yes, I would say God had bigger plans than I did!

WCC: Tell us about your latest book.
RJG: “Sisterchicks in Wooden Shoes!” releases in May of this year and it will probably be the final installment in the 8-book collection of Sisterchicks® novels. Writing this series has been a writer’s dream. My publisher gave me a travel budget with the last five books of the collection so over the past five years I’ve been to Australia and New Zealand, Paris, Venice, England and the Netherlands in order to do the all-important research for each story. I love to travel so this has all felt like a special gift from God.
I have loved hearing from midlife women who have discovered themselves inside the characters in all the Sisterchicks novels. So many have told me that the Lord used these stories to reignite their love for Him and to open their eyes to possibilities of what God has in store for them in their next season of life.
This is truly the message of joy for all of us. God has dreams for us. For all of us. When we surrender to Him completely, He makes His path known. Life happens inside the obedience. And it is an abundant life! Trust in the Lord with all your heart and hang on. His ways are definitely not our ways. But, oh, what wonderful ways they are!

I’m so happy that Robin Jones Gunn took the time to answer our questions. I hope that you’ll take to heart what she has shared and that you will visit her website. It has beautiful layout, graphics and is very interactive. You fell like you’re sitting in her living room.
